Bookkeeping Habits That Keep Month-End Painless

Most month-end stress comes from small tasks that were left undone weeks earlier. A handful of consistent habits removes almost all of it.

Reconcile weekly, not quarterly

A weekly reconciliation keeps discrepancies small and easy to trace. When you leave it until the end of a quarter, you are trying to remember decisions made months ago, and the review takes far longer than the sum of the weekly checks.

Set a fixed time each week, work through the bank feed, and clear anything unmatched before you close the file.

Capture source documents as they arrive

Photograph or forward receipts and invoices the day you receive them. Records with attached documentation survive an ATO review comfortably; records without it rely on memory.

Keep business and personal separate

Mixed transactions are the single biggest cause of messy files for small businesses. A dedicated business account and card removes hours of untangling later and gives you a much clearer view of trading performance.

Accurate books are a by-product of routine, not of effort at deadline time. Build the routine and reporting becomes straightforward.
